Small New-Build Toilet Makeover: A Simple DIY Cloakroom Transformation
If you’ve moved into a new-build home, you might know the feeling: everything is clean, fresh and perfectly functional… but it can also feel a little generic.
Our downstairs toilet was exactly that. It had the typical new-build magnolia walls and practical finishes, but it didn’t really feel like our home. Rather than spending a fortune on a complete bathroom renovation, I decided to give our small downstairs WC a simple DIY makeover using colour, pattern and a few carefully chosen accessories.
And the difference was surprisingly big.
From Generic New Build to Cosy Cloakroom
One of the easiest ways to transform a small downstairs toilet is to introduce colour and personality. If you are also not a big fan of panelling (I am not), you can achieve complete transformation by just adding a lick of paint and feature wallpaper. I chose a calming sage green and paired it with floral wallpaper to create a softer, more characterful space.
Sage green works particularly well if you love a calm, nature-inspired home because it brings a subtle connection to the outdoors without making a small room feel overwhelming.
Floral wallpaper was another simple way to make the space feel less “new build” and more personal. Small cloakrooms can actually be the perfect place to experiment with pattern because you only need a relatively small amount of wallpaper to create a noticeable impact.
You Don't Need a Big Budget
The best part of this makeover is that we didn't need to replace the toilet, basin or completely renovate the room.
Instead, the focus was on the things that make the biggest visual difference.

A new paint colour, I chose Matt Sage for calming impact (if your toilet is damp and want to have wipeable pain, make sure you buy the type that is suitable for kitchens and bathrooms)
Floral or Botanical wallpaper (click on the link for my favourite options at the moment)
Polyvine Decorators Varnish to seal the Wallpaper and make it waterproof - VERY IMPORTANT!
A few finishing touches to make the room feel more like us (use any existing candles, dried flowers, vases, etc). I added my own 3D cork Wall Art I thought would look very cute in the space.
This is one of my favourite approaches to DIY home improvement: work with what you already have and change the atmosphere rather than replacing everything.
